What If My Kids Don't Cooperate During Family Pictures? | Advice from a Lehigh Valley Family Photographer

Dear Parents Who Are Worried About Family Pictures...

If you're reading this because you're worried your kids won't cooperate during your family photo session, I want you to know something:

You're not alone.

It's probably the number one concern I hear before we ever meet.

Parents tell me things like:

"My husband hates pictures."

"My toddler won't sit still."

"My son refuses to smile."

"We're probably your worst family."

And every single time...

I smile.

Not because I'm laughing at them—but because I already know something they don't.

The best family photos almost never happen when everyone is standing perfectly still.

Perfect Kids Don't Make Perfect Pictures

The truth is...

Kids aren't supposed to stand still.

They're supposed to run, giggle, explore, make funny faces, and occasionally do something completely unexpected.

That's childhood.

After photographing hundreds of families throughout the Lehigh Valley, I've learned that I'm not waiting for perfect behavior.

I'm watching for connection.

Sometimes that's a mom wiping dirt off a little nose.

Sometimes it's Dad throwing a toddler into the air.

Sometimes it's siblings laughing because somebody accidentally farted.

(Yes... it happens more often than you'd think.)

Those are the moments families actually remember.

I Promise... You Don't Have To Entertain Your Kids

I Promise... You Don't Have To Entertain Your Kids

One thing I tell every family is this:

You don't have to spend the session trying to make your kids smile.

That's my job.

We'll play games, race through the field, tell silly jokes, whisper secrets, cuddle, and yes... sometimes we'll even tickle.

Sometimes we'll stop and let your child look at bugs for a minute.

Those little pauses often become my favorite photographs.

But What If My Child Cries?

Honestly?

Sometimes they do.

They're little humans.

They're tired.

They're hungry.

They're overwhelmed.

That's okay.

We'll slow down.

We'll take breaks.

We'll have snacks.

We'll reset.

There has never been a family I've photographed where I thought,

"Well... that was hopeless."

Never.

Parents are almost always surprised when they receive their gallery because they remember the chaos...

I remember the connection.

Family Pictures Aren't About Looking Perfect

Twenty years from now...

Your kids won't remember what they wore.

They won't remember if their hair stayed perfect.

They won't remember if they smiled for every photo.

They'll remember that Dad carried them on his shoulders.

That Mom squeezed them a little tighter.

That everyone laughed together.

That's the story I want to tell.
